Broken Spindles

MP3: Broken Spindles - “Beatdown Breakup (Cassettes Won’t Listen Remix)”

Kiss/Kick is the latest album from Broken Spindles, and the second release from The Faint’s blank.wav record label. Although Broken Spindles’ sole member Joel Petersen has done remixes for Of Montreal and AFI and is also a member of The Faint, Kiss/Kick is a strictly “No Eyeliner” record. It is more No Wave than New Wave.

The new album was made in Omaha’s Enamel, the studio owned by The Faint. With the entire studio at his disposal, Petersen used a live drummer more than on his previous Spindles records. Petersen says, “I knew that finding the balance of opposites was key to making sense of it all, to get the right mix of human and machine, acoustic and electronic, analog and digital, spontaneous and premeditated.” This combination is heard clearly on the song “Introvert” which features programmed live drums, keyboards that hold down the rhythmic center and a guitar sound that careens out of control.

Lyrically, the album explores human fragility, both in body and mind. Songs like “I’ve Never Been This Afraid” and “We All Want to Fit in” show Petersen observing others and himself — a constant theme in all of the Spindles records. Kiss/Kick is a record that takes the place of that late night journal writing session where the writer reveals more than what he knew was inside. As Petersen says, “For me, there has always been truth somewhere in the midst of extremes, and lyrically, this is where I wanted to be — open, honest, and truthful. ”

Kiss/Kick is Petersen’s strongest work to date. With four Broken Spindles albums and five Faint albums under his belt, he has found his voice, as well as comfort in being the observer of our inherent discomfort with ourselves and our relationships. He has learned how to reduce songs to their basic parts without losing the power and excitement of great production.

Austin, TX’s The Strange Boys prep debut LP for In the Red, playing SXSW

The Strange Boys

MP3: The Strange Boys - “Heard You Wanna Beat Me Up”

Austin, TX’s The Strange Boys evoke a wild-eyed, porcelain-skinned innocence that is capable of summoning the wayward spirit of Brian Jones. The mystery of the South couples with the mastery of rhythm making to create a sound that is completely timeless and familiar, yet absolutely raw and avant-garde. Greg Enlow’s syncopated, organ-driven grooves hark back to The Seeds’ “Pushing Too Hard” while guitarist Ryan Sambol’s acute voice wavers beyond compare. Older brother Philip Sambol keeps the pulse with the aptly named Matt Hammer, who unmercifully pounds an old Ludwig set.

The Strange Boys began as a duo (Ryan and Matt) in 2003. Philip and Greg joined in 2005 completing the line up and the band has been on a non-stop tour ever since. Since 2003 the band has recorded what amounts to several albums and EPs which were sold at shows, but never released. In 2007, Dusty Medical records released the Nothing EP and in 2008, In the Red records released the Woe is You and Me single. Now, finally, the band’s proper debut album is seeing the light of day and In The Red is proud to announce the arrival of The Strange Boys…And Girls Club. A 16 track beast that is easy to imagine being blasted out of any stereo system between The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators and Wire’s Pink Flag.

The Strange Boys were the backing band for Mighty Hannibal (50’s R&B recording artist), were main support for Roky Erickson and the Explosives at the Chaos in Tejas festival, have played South by Southwest the last four years, Austin City Limits Festival (2008), F Yeah Fest the last three years, Music Fest Northwest (2008) and Bamalama (2008); shared bills with Daniel Johnston, Black Lips, Reigning Sound, King Khan and BBQ, Jay Reatard, Mika Miko, No Age and BRMC; have toured with The Black Angels, F***ed Up, Crystal Antlers, and Darker My Love.

New Dent May & his Magnificent Ukulele music video, touring the UK with Animal Collective, North American tour with AC Newman launches next week

Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele

MP3:Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele - “Meet Me In The Garden”

Jackson, Mississippi native Dent May grew up singing in local church groups, acting in school plays, and performing at nursing home gigs with a recorder choir. In high school, he wrote synthy power-pop with his band The Rockwells while recording erotically charged novelty tracks with friends on the side. After three unsuccessful semesters at NYU’s film school, May moved to North Mississippi where he helped found the Cats Purring arts collective and formed a country-rock band called Cowboy Maloney’s Electric City. In late 2007, inspired by Serge Gainsbourg and Lee Hazlewood, he began performing as Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele and released a digital EP of cheeky lo-fi tunes, A Brush With Velvet. The title is a reference to The Partridge Family, episodes of which May obsessively collected and organized on VHS tapes as a teen. His debut album, The Good Feeling Music of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele, was recorded with Rusty Santos in May’s home, a double-wide trailer in Taylor, Mississippi (population: 300). He continues to perform with Cowboy Maloney’s Electric City, and recently began recording dance music under the moniker Dent Sweat.

Max Tundra teams up with Junior Boys for North American tour, plus new single and SXSW

Max Tundra

MP3: Max Tundra - “Which Song”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
For Junior Boys, please contact Kara Oliver [kara@motormouthmedia.com]
For Max Tundra, please contact Daniel Gill [daniel@forcefieldpr.com
Press materials available upon request

Max Tundra will be embarking on an extensive six-week tour of the Americas, commencing on March 28th in Toronto in support of last year’s Parallax Error Beheads You. Joining him on the tour will be Domino labelmates Junior Boys, they of the forthcoming Begone Dull Care.

Also, in conjunction with the tour, Max Tundra will release a new digital single on March 31 for “Which Song” with two exclusive new B-sides, Tundra himself wrote up descriptions of the two new tracks:

“Gummiknüppel”- a euphoric techno “banger” I recorded whilst artist-in-residence at Worm in Rotterdam.
“Which Song (Silverlink Remix)” - a wonderful reinterpretation by my friend Alex.

Max Tundra, real name Ben Jacobs, is an English multi-instrumental musician, singer and music producer. He has released two well-received albums for Domino Records: Some Best Friend You Turned Out To Be (2000) and Mastered By Guy At The Exchange (2002). He released his third album, Parallax Error Beheads You on Nov. 18, 2008 in the US. Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy) says, “What sets Max Tundra apart from any other band in the world is his attention to detail. This album is impossibly full of ideas, seeking out every imaginable sound in the world and giving each their own curtain call.”

Begone Dull Care, the remarkable new album from the duo of Jeremy Greenspan and Matthew Didemus, professionally known as Junior Boys, is set for release on March 24th in their native Canada, with the US to follow on April 7th. Begone Dull Care is the band’s third album, following the critical and commercial successes of Last Exit (2004) and So This Is Goodbye (2006). The title is a reference to a short film by the pioneering Oscar-winning Scottish-Canadian animator and electronic composer, Norman McLaren, who was a big influence on the conception and creation of this album.
