Princeton

MP3: Princeton - “Sadie and Andy (Feat. Meredith Metcalf)”

Los Angeles-based Princeton released its debut record, Cocoon of Love, September 29th on Kanine Records. Growing up on Princeton Street in Santa Monica, the group now lives in an aging green house on a hillside in the Eagle Rock district of LA where their album was recorded.

Among the many detrimental effects that love has on the mind, one of the more subtle is the way it litters the memory with a batch of misplaced associations - places, figures, products and (especially) music that, through chance, become invested with deep personal significance. This detritus of love is scattered all over Princeton’s, Cocoon of Love, right down to its title, taken from a chance line on a long-ago-cancelled children’s show. Stacks of herbal tea, a glow-in-the-dark monument, paperback writers, the Wall Street Journal, a departing Mercedes, The Metamorphosis, a series of Cambridge-commissioned paintings, video arcades, graffiti, and a cyclist on the Autobahn all figure prominently into Princeton’s musical sketches.

Princeton is twin brothers Jesse & Matt Kivel, Ben Usen and David Kitz. In support of the new album the band is wrapping up a tour with Ra Ra Riot and will head out this fall with Art Brut and later with OK GO.

Loney Dear launches tour with Asobi Seksu tonight in San Diego, plus new Yours Truly session

Loney Dear

MP3: Loney Dear - “Airport Surroundings”

Hailing from the small city of Jonkoping, Sweden, Loney Dear’s primary member Emil Svanängen first began making homemade recordings of delicate, folkish indie pop in the early 2000s. As Loney, Dear (the band has since deleted the comma from its name), Svanängen self-released three homemade CD-Rs through his website: River Fontana Redux, Citadel Band, and Sologne. As buzz developed through MP3 blogs and other new media manifestations, Sub Pop offered Svanängen a contract in 2006. The first proper Loney Dear album, Loney, Noir, was released in early 2007.

Svanängen describes Dear John as a “marvelous album in dark shades with a lava-like glow from underneath.

Praise for Loney Dear:

“A devotee of elaborate pop from the Beach Boys to a-ha, Mr. Svanängen sings plaintive confessions in a tenor so high and sweet it’s almost androgynous. The melodies are exquisite, and with each verse he surrounds them with more and more parts, creating pop crescendos of dizzying ingenuity: whistling, harmonizing, stepping up the percussion, simulating horn and string sections, making synthesizers pulsate and flutter all around”–Jon Pareles, NY Times

“Despair has never sounded so sweet.”–SPIN

“Svanangen’s captivating ruminations sound as if he’s trying to capture the purest essence of joy, albeit with a melancholy underbelly. It’s that bittersweet warmth that makes Loney, Dear’s hushed, pastoral folk songs seep into the heart.”–NPR

“He wraps the ups and downs of a whirlwind romance into tiny packages. You’re left hungry, fully certain that 34 minutes– let alone five– will never be enough of this very, very good thing.”–Pitchfork

“Through soft layers of acoustic instrumentation and vocal harmonies, Svanängen creates a sustained and lasting representation of the classic emotions of regret, peace, and loneliness.” –PopMatters

“Svanängen’s bright falsetto holds his miniature musical tapestries together.” –Austin Chronicle

Dent May’s unique vocal style-part crooner, part falsetto, and all showman-reflects the influences of some of his favorite singers (Prince, Serge Gainsbourg, and Lee Hazlewood, to name a few). His love of various song styles results in an infectiously enjoyable combination of ukulele, drums, pedal steel, violin, horns, and bass. One second his songs hint at Brazilian Tropicalia, the next at a ’50s barbershop quartet or an early-20th-century country swing.

Also performing: L.A.’s own DJ Nobody takes the stage as part of dublab’s 10th anniversary celebration, making the last Saturdays Off the 405 of 2009 a not-to-be-missed event.

Bio:
Jackson, Mississippi native Dent May grew up singing in local church groups, acting in school plays, and performing at nursing home gigs with a recorder choir. In high school, he wrote synthy power-pop with his band The Rockwells while recording erotically charged novelty tracks with friends on the side. After three unsuccessful semesters at NYU’s film school, May moved to North Mississippi where he helped found the Cats Purring arts collective and formed a country-rock band called Cowboy Maloney’s Electric City. In late 2007, inspired by Serge Gainsbourg and Lee Hazlewood, he began performing as Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele and released a digital E.P. of cheeky lo-fi tunes, A Brush With Velvet. The title is a reference to The Partridge Family, episodes of which May obsessively collected and organized on VHS tapes as a teen. His debut album, The Good Feeling Music of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele, was recorded with Rusty Santos in May’s home, a double-wide trailer in Taylor, Mississippi (population: 300). He continues to perform with Cowboy Maloney’s Electric City, and recently began recording dance music under the moniker Dent Sweat.
