Music Go Music

Flavorwire Exclusive Q&A and Video Debut

MP3: Music Go Music - “Warm In The Shadows”

The members of ‘Music Go Music’ met at a party in the home of a man who was, at that time, called “The Condor.”[1] Over the rager’s din we made a connection. It was mild at first, but fermented for a couple of weeks until Torg invited me and Gala Bell over to make a song together. We met several days later and, in the space of an hour, the first Music Go Music song was written. We recorded it over the next few days and went our separate ways, but reconvened enough times over the course of the following year-and-a-half to record eight more songs.

Initially, I thought that we’d play these recordings for our nearest and dearest and then lay them aside, but circumstances conspired against these plans, and now they’re working their way out into the world. Though unexpected, this is a welcome turn of events. No happier thought passes through our minds than that of a bevy of middle-aged women dancing to our music,[2] and now it seems like our vision may be within reach.
Something must be said here about the music itself.[3] Music Go Music make pop music but, fortunately, the term means very little these days. What kind of pop music is it? Rock and Roll, Disco, Metal, Boogie, Trans-Hand, Psychedelic? How does it work? Perhaps this will mean something:

As we move through life, there is a “curtain of fantasy”[4] with which we cover a murky reality, a curtain on which we project a clear and comforting image of ourselves and the world. The slightest shifting of it fills us with dread. But imagine that the curtain is raised to reveal a more profoundly resonant version of what was on it in the first place; a “Technicolor” reality. So enchanted are we by this scene that we fail to notice the second, dark curtain in the background.[5]

Music Go Music’s immediate plans are to continue to make music that’s visual and funks. Hopefully we will meet you where you live.[6]

-Kamer Maza, Summer 2009

[1] What happened to this man? He disappeared from us, like some wayward angel
[2] This may change
[3] This kind of thing must be talked about in abstract terms - why describe music that can be so easily listened to? Just go to a site and listen. There is no reason for me to waste your time banging on cauldrons, when an mp3 can bring the stars to pity…YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN

[5] Even if we do catch a glimpse of its folds, we are too fixed on the foreground to give them much thought

What the press has already said about Music Go Music:

“When people talk about the rebirth of disco, this is how it should be, manic zombifications reanimated from the Abba songbook, wired withPhilip K Dick paranoia and Donna Summer euphoria.” -NME

“They begin with a bright-eyed Scandinavian sashay and end with a ten-minute Mediterranean disco romp featuring programmed drums, making detours along the way into rainy day ballads and guitar infernos. The cumulative effect plays like the greatest hits of dance saviors that never existed…and indeed, they probably should only be performed from inside an aquadome at the bottom of the Caspian Sea, or at least during a summer-long residency in Ibiza.” -The Fader

“Music Go Music could be the 21st century answer to ABBA. The LA trio’s sharp articulation, flamboyancy and brilliant ability to create timeless disco-pop is totally irresistible.” -The Fly

“There is a late seventies, post-’I Feel Love’ disco feel to ‘Warm in the Shadows,’ and, whethter or not it was their ambition to find that sound, it’s nonetheless a mightily refreshing dose of looseness and euphoria…One thing isd for sure: the ambition for a long-lasting dynasty of overblown, slightly crackpot pop excess is there.” -Stool Pigeon

Partisan Records announces Green Manalishi 2009 Tour

Partisan Records: Green Manalishi 2009 Tour

and including Oct. 22 CMJ label showcase at Bowery Ballroom

Download: Partisan Records 2009 Sampler

About Partisan:
Partisan Records is a Brooklyn-based artist-run independent label dedicated
to the unique visions of those we are so privileged to represent. We believe that artistry in its many forms essentially has a singular purpose: to create and share the next new story. At Partisan, our artists create the stories that others will tell.

Partisan Records along with Knitting Factory Entertainment is proud to present the Green Manalishi Tour 2009 featuring the entire roster of Partisan artists for a limited East Coast run of 6 dates. At Partisan, we’re assembling a remarkable community of artists, musicians, and counter-culture misfits who are as talented as they are “colorful”. For all of their genuine “colorfulness”, we are reminded why we’re somewhat consciously creating this madhouse every time we hang out, hear a song, or watch a performance by one of our artists / bands. They are some of the greatest writers and performers around, and we feel incredibly privileged to be working with them. Assembling this mob for one tour has been no easy task, and we can’t express from a financial / mental standpoint the sheer
terror we feel knowing the Bacchanalian gathering is rapidly approaching. So, feel free to reap the rewards from our questionable judgment while these incredibly gifted “colorful” people are all in one place. Are we self destructive? Maybe. Are we going to eat it in a year or two as the industry collapses and our bands leave us to sign with Warner/EMI/Sony/Universal? Possibly. But like Conan said, “Let teachers and priests and philosophers brood over questions of reality and illusion. I know this: if life is illusion, then I am no less an illusion, and being thus, the illusion is real to me. I live, I burn with life, I love, I slay, and am content.”

Bobby Birdman preps new album, New Moods, for Fryk Beat and shares new MP3

Bobby Birdman

MP3: Bobby Birdman - “Only For A While”

After three years of tireless tinkering, Bobby Birdman is back.

On New Moods, his most focused and complete musical effort to date, upbeat pop anthems jostle up against shimmering slow a cappella numbers, while New Orleans bounce, dancehall, and hyphy funnel noisily into each self-produced pop number. Sun-drenched guitars and Bobby Birdman’s characteristic, unfuckwithable new-school croon wash over drumline weirdness and tyrannical sub bass, like a rogue wave on the Malibu beaches he frequently surfs.

New Moods is deconstructed pop-rock, but the melodies are so irresistible that they hook into a timeless, Van Dyke Parks-cum-Perry Como sound that’s as at home blasting out of a tape deck on your beach towel as it is in the club.

Born Robert Kieswetter, but dubbed “Bobby Birdman” by surf buddy Kyle Field (Little Wings), Kieswetter released several solo albums on Portland, OR-based indie labels before relocating to Los Angeles. No stranger to various LA art, music, and fashion scenes, Kieswetter has plied his talents composing music for visual artist Geoff McFetridge, and modeling for Band of Outsiders’ Fall 2008 line (with surfboard in hand, of course). He’s even remixed Young MC’s “Fastest Rhyme” for last year’s Delicious Vinyl anniversary release.

Bobby Birdman has toured with Will Oldham, Hot Chip, Joanna Newsom, YACHT, Dirty Projectors, White Rainbow, Little Wings and Lucky Dragons, and has graced venues as diverse as LA’s The Smell to the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The range of talent that Kieswetter hides beneath his unassuming fledgling moniker is just beginning to surge, and New Moods will crest the wave.

“Birdman has a smooth-as-butter voice and an uncanny knack for melody that separate him from the the experimental pop pack… [New Moods] is his strongest and most posititve work to date.” -Casey Jarmen (Willamete Week)

Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele to tour with Fiery Furnaces & Cryptacize this Fall

Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele

MP3: Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele - “Meet Me In The Garden”

Jackson, Mississippi native Dent May grew up singing in local church groups, acting in school plays, and performing at nursing home gigs with a recorder choir. In high school, he wrote synthy power-pop with his band The Rockwells while recording erotically charged novelty tracks with friends on the side. After three unsuccessful semesters at NYU’s film school, May moved to North Mississippi where he helped found the Cats Purring arts collective and formed a country-rock band called Cowboy Maloney’s Electric City. In late 2007, inspired by Serge Gainsbourg and Lee Hazlewood, he began performing as Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele and released a digital E.P. of cheeky lo-fi tunes, A Brush With Velvet. The title is a reference to The Partridge Family, episodes of which May obsessively collected and organized on VHS tapes as a teen. His debut album, The Good Feeling Music of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele, was recorded with Rusty Santos in May’s home, a double-wide trailer in Taylor, Mississippi (population: 300). He continues to perform with Cowboy Maloney’s Electric City, and recently began recording dance music under the moniker Dent Sweat.
