aTelecine is:
Founding Members: Sasha Grey + Pablo St. Francis
Additional Members: Anthony Djuan + Ian C

Many know Sasha Grey for her starring role in Steven Soderbergh’s Girlfriend Experience or as Vince Chase’s girlfriend on Entourage or as the starlet on the cover of the October 2010 issue of Playboy Magazine. Although Sasha has now released two limited edition full-length LPs and a 7″ with her band aTelecine and has also worked with Current 93 lending her vocals to “Aleph at Hallucinatory Mountain”, she is only beginning to be known for her music, and yet Sasha has always made music. Sasha was inspired to play music by groups such as Throbbing Gristle and KMFDM and has been recording music since she was 15 years old.

So what does aTelecine sound like? aTelecine take an experimental approach to making music in the form of sound collages which bring to mind artists such as Nurse With Wound and Coil branching out into a world of dark ambient and death-dub. Their music is ever evolving and mutating and it’s only with each new album that they release that we are able to glimpse where they are heading.

These releases mark the first time any of the group’s music has been made available digitally - in addition the band is preparing to release a new LP, The Falcon and the Pod in July. It is the first of a trilogy of albums which will be released over the next year or so on Pendu.

Weekend announces new single, shares remix

MP3: “Coma Summer (Speculator’s Subconscious Mix)” - http://bit.ly/eKjGcb

VIDEO: “Monday Morning / Monongah, WV” - http://pitchfork.com/tv/#/musicvideo/9928-weekend-monday-morning-monongah-wv-slumberland/

Within a grainy film-still between a summer sunset and the end of times lies the post-punk squall of Weekend. Weekend filter the aggression, tempo and sneer of punk through a wall of reverb, haunting melody, feedback and primitive garage guitar. Formed in San Francisco in late 2009, the band have quickly developed a totally distinctive take on the history of noise rock. Combining noisy guitars, pounding rhythms and dark post-punk vibes in fresh ways isn’t easy, but Weekend somehow make it look like it is.

Their debut album Sports, released in November 2010, was one of the most assured debuts in recent memory, full of rumbling rhythms, layers of LOUD guitars and most of all great songs that pay special attention to texture and atmosphere, and leaven even the most riotous moments with unexpected shards of melody. Rolling in at the end of the year amidst a backdrop of sound-alike lo-fi beach-pop records Sports stood way out from the pack, “a burning hole bridging the distance between then and right now.” in the words of Pitchfork.

As one of the highlights of Sports, “End Times” is power-pop as interpreted by “Feed Me With Your Kiss”-era MBV, an amazing mix of melody and racket that perfectly encapsulates what Weekend are about. Driven by relentless drums and a pummeling bass line, it could the most straightforwardly pop track on the album, if you ignore the insane, shredding feedback guitar that bursts through on each chorus, turning what was loud and raucous into LOUD mayhem. And it sports a melody most pop bands would kill for — amazing stuff. On the flip side, LA duo Speculator remix album opener “Coma Summer” into a hypnotic Kraut-inflected daydream — trippy, motorik and totally compelling.

“…everything that a lot of modern indie rock is frequently failing to be in 2010: loud, immediate, and engaging, with a strong melodic sense of songwriting to tie it all together.” — Pitchfork

“…for a band still very much in its infancy, Sports is an astonishing body of work far beyond any kind of expectation you’d put at its creators’ feet.” — Drowned In Sound

“…how much better could any band get than this song?” — Rolling Stone

Back in Jan. we announced a remix contest for Toro Y Moi’s “Still Sound” - the winner was to be selected by Chaz Bundick and have their track released on an official Toro Y Moi remix EP. The winning track is by France’s Voodoo Bear, you can listen to it here. It will be included on the new Still Sound Remix EP, out on June 13 on the UK label Amazing Sounds. On his recent tour, Chaz also spoke with Jay-Z’s new blog, Life + Times about his love of horror movie soundtracks, and Noisey.com paid the band a visit in Atlanta, documenting their tour stop at the Drunken Unicorn. Toro Y Moi recently announced appearances at Pitchfork Fest, Outside Lands and Hopscotch Fest this year, and have a few other dates on the horizon, with lots more to be announced soon.

Bio:

Columbia, South Carolina’s Chaz Bundick (aka Toro Y Moi) rose to the fore of the music blogosphere in summer 2009 when he and a few peers made their hazy bedroom recordings the most talked-about sound of the season. Critics across the board took notice of the range of his compositions, and his debut album, Causers of This, showcased his ability to make elements of Brian Wilson’s pop, 80s R&B, and Stones Throw hip hop coalesce into a distinct sound that’s as suitable for a dance floor as it is a pair of headphones.

When Chaz first signed to Carpark Records, the plan was to release two records in 2010– one electronic and one with live instrumentation–and although it didn’t quite fit into the same calendar year as his debut, Underneath the Pine is that latter offering. This release sees him following the same creative urges to completely different ends. Having spent the year listening to film composers like Ennio Morricone and François de Roubaix, Bundick returned to his home in Columbia, the birthplace of many Toro tracks of yore, to bring his new ideas to fruition. The result of these sessions is an album evocative of R. Stevie Moore’s homespun ruminations, David Axelrod’s sonic scope, Steve Reich-ian piano phrasing, and the pervasive funk of his first record. Underneath the Pine announces a new phase for an artist whose talent defies classification.

Seapony announces album details of Hardly Art debut full-length, shares new MP3

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

Seapony

MP3: “Blue Star” http://hardlyart.com/mp3/SP_BlueStar.mp3

The music of Seapony is refreshing in its simplicity. Most songs on Go With Me use no more than three chords, with an average running time around two-and-a-half minutes. In lieu of a human drummer, the Seattle trio entrusts time-keeping to a vintage gizmo the size of a desktop calculator. The lyrics to “Dreaming,” the track that catapulted them into the spotlight, are just six lines long. Like Young Marble Giants and Beat Happening before them, this young three-piece has generated excitement that belies their music’s modest means. And their back story is just as no-nonsense.

Seapony is songwriter Danny Rowland, singer Jen Weidl, and bass player Ian Brewer. Danny and Ian grew up and made music together in Oklahoma. In 2001, they moved to Olympia, WA. In 2004, Danny visited Cincinnati, missed his flight home, and ended up staying in Ohio for four years; he met Jen during his Buckeye State sojourn. After a period of work and study in Lawrence, KS, the happy couple came west in 2010 and were reunited with Ian in Seattle. Seapony was born.

Although Danny has composed many originals over the years, “Dreaming” was the only finished Seapony tune when he and Jen arrived in the Emerald City; the rest of the songs featured on Go With Me were written afterward. Likewise, the friends had only played as a trio once before, while Danny and Jen were vacationing in Seattle. “We were all messing around with an acoustic guitar, a glockenspiel, and an Omnichord,” Danny recalls. The vision for Seapony was more focused: Fuzz-drenched guitar playing simple chord progressions, topped with concise melodic hooks and Jen’s breathy vocals.

Other bands make a fuss about coloring outside the lines, but Seapony aspires to the reverse, making each ditty distinctive while operating within the same basic sonic framework. The dreamy “Nobody Knows,” for instance, emerged from attempts to distribute melodic materials between different instruments, with more prominent bass and a subtler type of guitar lick. If the character of a song seems more upbeat, Danny may adopt a darker tone for the lyrics, as on “I Really Do.” Regardless, he wants other people to be able to relate to what he writes, which is why his words are few and his topics familiar.

“You can sing about being sad and being in love, or you can sing about the weather,” he says, apropos of his subject matter and connecting with listeners. For now, at least, Danny is sticking to the former. He writes the songs for Jen because he thinks her voice shimmers amidst all that distortion, whereas his just sounds rotten. Although he’s credited as the primary songwriter, Danny admits that he solicits Jen’s opinion throughout his creative process, from initial approval of melodic ideas to experimenting with turns of phrase together.

Ironically, Danny’s introduction to both Ian and Jen resulted from answering ads seeking drummers. That’s right: Danny is a drummer who leads a group with no drums. “Drums are too loud,” he insists. “Plus I don’t like the sound of the crash. It can get in the way.” Drum machines are another story. In high school, Danny began experimenting with a classmate’s Roland 808. “He didn’t know how to operate it, and thought it was broken. I figured it out and showed it to him. Then he wanted it back.” Seapony relies on a vintage Alesis HR-16, which Jen bought Danny for his birthday three years ago.

The band’s ascent has been almost absurd in its rapidity. After posting a handful of demos (including “Dreaming”) on the Internet in late 2010, UK label Double Denim latched on to Seapony and released a 7-inch single in a limited edition of 300 copies. In a matter of weeks, the band was favorably reviewed on Pitchfork, played on KEXP 90.3 FM Seattle, and made its live club debut. In short order, they were invited to appear on bills with La Sera, the Love Language, Kisses, and Pains of Being Pure At Heart.

Having written and recorded Go With Me at home, even as they got settled into a city where they had virtually no friends-let alone extensive ties to the local music scene-Seapony is still finding its comfort zone onstage. Don’t mistake the absence of stage banter for lack of enthusiasm or appreciation, Danny emphasizes. “The Velvet Underground didn’t talk,” he observes. “It’s cooler to just play song after song, like the Ramones did.” Exactly. Keep it simple, and there’s no telling how much impact the music can make.
