VIDEO: Black Cab Session

It was four months ago this day - well, actually, on a day very much like this day anyway, that the world heard its first of Bonnie Prince Billy new album, Wolfroy Goes to Town. Four months. Not that long a-tall. Since then, there’s been shows played, commercials run, station IDs recited, videos dropped…all in the service of the deceptively light (but actually quite heavy) words and music of Wolfroy. This is a record that takes some spins to sort through, and so to hep you down in the endless path, here’s a single to regrooving a Wolfroy favorite. But first -

What world do you live in? Are you online or on the street? Because real life on Earth has its limits. For instance, check out this math - one four-minute album track plus two four-minute non-album on two sides of a 7″ single. It can’t be done! And so, if you are digital, you hear “Time to be Clear” from the album Wolfroy Goes to Town, followed by the non-LP songs “Whipped” and “Out-of-Mind.” If you are live, you are down at the record shop, buying a two-song 7″ called “The B-Sides for “Time to be Clear”" and “Time to be Clear” is back on your album at home! But it doesn’t matter, because both these non-LP B’s are little monsters, rooted in the same dark earth as Wolfroy, but reaching for higher peaks, as sides of singles always should. Starting with a familiar weary tone and limping gait-lessness, “Whipped,” soon ascends to heights of emoting vocals not encountered throughout the entire album that preceded it. The comfy bob-and-strut of 21st century honky-tonk gives “Out-of-Mind” a sweet jukebox feeling, again creating a safe place for naked expression to occur in short order. Yes, the pleasures are fairly immense here, in the way that only two songs can provide.

These songs were recorded with the suddenly-ubiquitous Bonny crew of Ben Boye, Van Campbell, Emmett Kelly, Danny Kiely and Angel Olson. Both sides were recorded with David Ferguson, who brings his strong roots and subtle flair to the mix. Those of you with sharp eyes and ears may already know that Fergie brought his extensive experiences to the Bonny-Sweeney 10″ single of last summer “There Is No God.” Fergie and Bonny go all the way back to the session ten years gone when Bonny was summoned to the Johnny Cash session where his own “I See a Darkness” was being recorded by The Man himself. Fergie was Cash’s main engineer then and his presence there was a calming and centering one to Bonny. The sweet and natural feel of the recordings they have made over the last couple years are a testament to their bond.

The cover drawing was supplied by the great American artist, publisher and aesthete, Sammy Harkham. Those of you who wear Bonny’s doo-rag know this image, as it is emblazoned on top of your head.
Ever the trail-razer, Bonny hops into something funny here: a three-song 7″ single with its head chopped off! Rather than try something silly like put the songs on a larger format (because who in their right mind would…um, that is -), the b-sides are accorded the space they need to rock and groove while the A-side exists in our head (and online, where space and sound ain’t an option, is they? hur!), an echo of the epic, endless album that was (and still is, kids!) Wolfroy Goes to Town.

The First Person Shootr experiment, which began in the Spring of 2011, has blurred ambient instrumental, minimal, and 2 step, with traces of the R&B sound Fred used to hear in his mother’s Camaro. His first EP will be released via Lefse Records in February.

Real Estate just wrapped up a short East Coast tour which also found them playing their largest NYC show yet, at Terminal 5, and now have announced even more North American dates in April centered around the band’s first appearance at Coachella. In addition to a slew of year-end accolades (including #9 album of the year at Pitchfork, #32 album of the year at Pazz & Jop, and other year-end nods from The Onion, Paste, Q, Uncut, NME, Stereogum, Gorilla Vs. Bear, American Songwriter & tons more) the band recently talked to ABC News, co-hosted Much Music’s The Wedge w/ Damian of Fucked Up, stopped by 120 Minutes to chat with Matt Pinfield and taped a Tiny Desk Concert at NPR’s DC offices. Domino has also announced that the “Easy” single will see a US release on April 10 - you can pre-order it here

Bio:

Days was recorded over the course of five patient months in a remote New Paltz, NY barn-cum-studio with the help of Kevin McMahon (Titus Andronicus, The Walkmen), is a coming of age moment for childhood friends Martin Courtney (Guitar and Vocals), Matt Mondanile (Guitar) and Alex Bleeker (Bass): a gorgeous suite of guitar-pop songs. Days is a testament to the fact that the sonic formula Real Estate developed and shared with their debut album (Real Estate, Woodsist 2009) heralded the arrival of a new, genuine and enduring group of voices in American independent music. Days sees the band tighten and refine their brand of timeless, melodic and genuine music- consolidating the breezy sketches of their earlier work into considered, graceful pop songs.

Download a previously unreleased song from 2009

MP3: “Dead Pontoon”

Toro Y Moi’s first commercial release, the “Blessa” single, introduced the world to Chaz Bundick’s brand of introspective, atmospheric pop music, and while the A-side wound up laying the framework for his debut, Causers Of This, backing track, “109″, hinted at a side of his music having more in common with the oddball pop of Ariel Pink than any of Causers’ reference points. as it turns out, around the same time he was experimenting with music software and sampling, Bundick was recording a slew of short and sweet lo-fi tracks chronicling his version of college grad indecision. Now, after two albums, an EP, loads of tour dates, and a move to Berkeley, CA, these songs still mean a lot to him, and they’re collected on the retrospective set titled June 2009.

Originally part of the tour-only CD-R of the same name, June 2009 feels like a peek inside the mind of an artist not knowing where to turn once stripped of the structure of school life. He struggles with good friends moving away (”Sad Sams”), the pressing feeling that a move to New York is a necessary career move (”Take The L To Leave”), and the fear that simple pleasures have become a thing of the past (”Ektelon”). But more than nostalgic yearnings for the recent past, the songs are like journal entries- as commemorative as they are therapeutic. Elsewhere, tracks like “Girl Problems” and “Dead Pontoon” show how his first album might have sounded if “109″ had been that first single’s A-side, with reverb-soaked, angular guitar riffs serving as focal points of the power-pop periphery. Also included is an early version of Causers standout “Talamak,” one of his first cuts to make the blog rounds and an interesting insight into the process of reformatting his work to fit with the album. Closer “New Loved Ones” sees Bundick in a rare, intimate environment, accompanied only by an acoustic guitar and in the throes of love lost. With songs varied in style but bound together by their personal subject matter, June 2009 is a portrait of a young man unknowingly on the cusp of a fruitful career.

All Of Us, Together is the first proper full-length from Vancouver’s Teen Daze. Arriving after a prolific stretch of EPs, singles, and remixes since 2010, and recorded in the hopeful turn from spring to summer 2011, it’s something of a culmination. “I’m very proud of this as my first real LP, and the statement it makes. It fully represents where I’ve come to as an electronic artist.”

Teen Daze’s music has always suggested an auditory utopia; this album now propels those aesthetic notions forward in the timeline, resulting in a present moment awareness, rather than trademark nostalgia. “I came upon an old book at a thrift store called Utopian Visions, an encyclopaedic volume of different views on what utopia might look like, which became a huge inspiration. Especially when considering the future of our world as it actually unfolds. We’re becoming more and more self-reliant, more and more separated from our communities. I wanted to make a record that sounded more synthetic but also inviting-this is futuristic music with a heart.”

It won’t take long to hear it as his purest form electronic work to date. Spacious opener “Treten” introduces a pulse that runs throughout Together, sometimes resting in warmth (”Hold”, “For Body and Kenzie”), other times reaching for the smoke-filled ceiling of a club (”Erbstück”, “Brooklyn Sunburn”). Perhaps these tracks feel so alive and communal because they were arrived at through performance. “I played a lot of this material on tour last year, and there’s a connection to that element, it’s all become very dear to me.”

“Together” is the key word here. This is a record meant for interaction, be it on the dancefloor or on a drive under the night sky with friends. “There are countless reasons on why a person would create something; my reason is bring people together, to let them know that they’re not alone.”

Who can decipher the true origins of Neverever? Some say it started on the roadside in Malibu when a truck driver named Eric Fisher and his childhood buddy, Shaun Puklavetz, picked up Joe Meek’s great niece and nephew, Jihae and Wallace. Others believe that it began a year earlier when Neverever’s lost classic Angelic Swells was released on legendary pop mogul, Mike Schulman’s, Slumberland Records.

Whichever you choose to put faith in, it was after consulting their book of Sacred Symbols of the Ancients, that Wallace and Jihae realized Eric and Shaun’s rhythmical bond was most likely destined to be the missing piece of their puzzle. A mutual appreciation for Dave Hill (he of Slade fame)’s haircut soon sealed the deal one night after practice in Shaun’s hot-tub.

The four began hallucinating endlessly about writing songs that could fill the void between one’s love for Sandy Salisbury’s “Do Unto Others” and the other’s for Comet Gain’s Casino Classics. These visions began to slowly creep across Los Angeles stages like a purple smoke bomb engulfing. Shortly thereafter, crowds caught on and gaggles of girls and boys began flocking to their shows in fear that the flames which burned would someday descend back into technicolor smoke.

Shake-A-Baby is that technicolor smoke turned to solid vinyl. The band says it best: “The EP is loosely about the likes of child brides and sugar empire heirs either reluctantly growing up or simply choosing not to. Clinging to pre-teen and adolescent freedoms, Miss Teen Californian girlfriends, carefree trips, and dream-like loves, whether the changing world around them allows it or not. Some influences include the Raspberries, Dwight Twilley and Phil Seymour, ELO, Kim Fowley, Fleetwood Mac, Big Star, Alvin Stardust, Sandy Salisbury.”

From the couples’ dance swoon of “Baby Oil And Iodine” to the latin-tinged glam-pop of “Mexicoco,” we see the newly revitalized Neverever cooking up a heady mix of classic power-pop styles. “Bunker Spreckles” is a swinging little tune, featuring a typically catchy vocal melody from Jihae and a stick-in-your-head keyboard line. “Venus” slows the tempo down for a twangy slice of doo-wop pop, while “Wedding Day” is a rambunctious power-pop gem that would slot in nicely on either of the first few Blondie albums.

Cut from the same classicist pop cloth at their debut album, on Shake-A-Baby Neverever sharpen their tunes, hone their hooks and brighten their palette.

Attention Public,

After careful, weeklong consideration, Terry Malts (San Francisco, CA) have decided to go forth and record a debut LP as per the request of Slumberland Records. Displaying a slick, intelligent take on modern chainsaw pop, TIME certainly lives up to its name!

The wrong turns that led us here: a 6-song cassette (Log Lady; 2010, now in its second pressing), and two 7″ singles (both Slumberland; 2011).

Who is/are/was/will be Terry Malts? A yellow-pages private dick has gleaned the following: Corey Cunningham (guitar, backing vox), by way of Dickson, TN-cum-cardboard-box-in-Toronto, was asked to housesit in Fresno, CA. Duties fulfilled, he shot north on a graffiti trip to 924 Gilman St. and immediately bonded with fellow men’s room “artists” Phil Benson (bass guitar, lead vox) and the unfortunately-named Nathan Sweatt (drums, backing vox).

Hands shook, vibes exchanged; the trio felt compelled to distill their energy into a unified voice. Terry’s gospel is succinct, direct, sincere, and timed expertly with next year’s looming apocalypse: life is hopeless, enjoy!

With a live reputation that bleeds funky “Punk” attitude, I’ve been told this urgency has been crammed into the TM studio edition. Recorded by a machine, then expertly mixed by human being Monte Vallier (Weekend, Young Prisms), this music may compel you to type the following buzzwords into your blog (which, I LOVE, by the way!): catchy, husky, hunky, sharp, blue-collar, rocking, hockey-rock, working-class, perfect, near-perfect, not-half-bad, and/or not-bad.

It’s an album, it’s a lifestyle, it’s a 34-minute hour of pure, unadulterated Malts… alright?

Young Magic’s debut album, Melt, is out on Feb. 14 on Carpark. The band just premiered its second official music video for “Night In The Ocean” and a remix of “Sparkly” by matthewdavid over at XLR8R. You can also check out a recent In The Open session the band taped in the woods near San Francisco here Also you can hear “Slip Time” and some kind words about the band from the NPR / All Songs Considered crew right here.

Bio:

Although now firmly settled in New York City, Young Magic’s three members came together through equal helpings of openness and fortuity. In 2010, singer and producer Isaac Emmanuel had left his home continent of Australia to travel across Europe, over to New York, and down through Mexico, all the while creating and recording music with whatever instruments he found along the way. While in Mexico, Emmanuel kept a tight correspondence with fellow Australian expat Michael Italia, who for months had been similarly traveling across Europe and South America with portable recording gear in tow. They decided to meet up in New York, where their good friend from a few years prior, Indonesian-born vocalist Melati Malay, had been living and making her own recordings. In early 2011 the three friends, who had initially bonded over their broad musical palettes, began recording together and contributing songs to the record, culling influences and finding their own footing among them.

The immediately fruitful collaboration brought forth singles “Sparkly”, “You With Air” and “Night In The Ocean,” all of which were fitting indicators of the band’s chameleonic sound, heavily informed by West African rhythms, Brainfeeder hip-hop, UK bass, and 60s psychedelic soul. Young Magic’s full-length debut, Melt, comprises both of these tracks-as well as their B-sides-and expands on their varied aesthetic, at once electronically sequenced and completely organic. Containing recordings from 10 different countries, the album flaunts new facets at each turn, letting-as on “Watch For Our Lights”-rough samples from distant lands coalesce with drum machines and distorted synths. “Night In The Ocean” and “Jam Karet” put soaring synth pads around the higher frequencies while deep kicks keep the songs grounded, allowing Isaac and Melati’s vocals to float in synchronicity between. And with its shifting rhythm, open structure, and layers of echoed vocals, closer and highlight, “Drawing Down The Moon,” hints at crystalline take on UK garage: a last dance from a collection of short stories from around the world. With a sonic mélange of vibes on a debut that remains cohesive and distinctly their own, it will be exciting to see where the trio’s tastes will guide them next.

WOLFROY CERTIFIED ORGANIC

The organic movement is finally real! It brings us a caffeinated surge of pleasure to introduce to you the first-ever (and only) Bonnie Prince-certified organic coffee. Up until now there were rules and rules about how to get a product certified organic, but standards are for the birds. And Bonny eats birds for breakfast. With coffee, goddamn.

Along his travels Bonny somehow managed to find himself on the island of Hawaii and met up with the Kona Coffee people. After rigorous experiments with bean burning, granulated sugar filtering, boll weevil cross pollination and button pressing (always the most critical part of any operation, including our own. Lever-pullers, shut you mouth!), this limited edition roast is ready to be bought (but mostly sold) right here, right now in the Drag City interglobal e-marketplace.

Each half pound of whole beans comes in a re-sealable black bag complete with a one of a kind pink label to certify the clean body and fresh finish (and deep paranoia) you expect from the Bonny brand. It tastes best when paired with Wolfroy Goes To Town, available for purchase here, but it’s also not bad with chewing gum, hash browns (or as we like to say, hash, browns), garden heirlooms, sour patch gummies, cough drops, foodstuff, ulcers, dandelions, hot dogs and turkey necks.

This “Bonny Billy Blend” from Kona Rose Coffee is 100% Kona Coffee certified Organic by HOFA. 100% Wolfroy certified, too. Certified what is what you’ll have to buy the coffee to figure out.
