Chicago’s Smith Westerns will release its sophomore LP, Dye It Blonde, on Fat Possum on Jan. 18. The first single from the record is “Weekend” which you can hear here or here. The video for the song was directed by Focus Creeps and gives you an idea of what a typical weekend is like for the band in their native Chicago.

The record was produced by Chris Coady (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, !!!, TVOTR, Beach House, etc.) in New York City. The band has already won wide acclaim based on its self-titled debut, originally released in 2009 via the Chicago label HoZac while all of the band members were still enrolled in high school. The band is currently in Europe on tour with MGMT, and today announced a slew of early 2011 dates, including two NYC dates in Jan and later dates with the UK band and Fat Possum labelmates Yuck.

“”Her tears are never-ending,” frontman Cullen Omori sings with a affectation, later asking, “Do you think/ It is normal/ To go through life/ Oh so formal?” He’s talking to a girl, of course, and given the song’s title, it’s easy to assume he’s about to kick out some “The Boys Are Back in Town“-level sentiments about hanging out, drinking, and partying Friday through Sunday. But then there’s that chorus: “Weekends are never fun/ Unless you’re around here too.” This is one to jam out to, all week long.” – Pitchfork (Best New Music / #51 Song of The Year)
