Today The Side Project shares their newest eclectic and evolving groove “Everything I Do” (feat. Alita Moses, Akie Bermiss, ScienZe) ahead of their upcoming record Everything We Do. Check it out here.

The Side Project takes on the concept of a saxophone quartet and pairs it with drums, bass, and soul singers to create their edgy and irresistible sound.

The band was started in 2013 by Eyal Hai, Alto player and lead arranger for the group. He called his friends, Eden Bareket on Bari, Arnan Raz on Tenor, and Hailey Niswanger on Soprano, and met for the first time at the Bedford L stop in the NYC Subway. They spent a few hours experimenting with different arrangements of Pop and R&B hits, and it was quickly understood by all that this band was unique.

Since then, The Side Project has opened for the New York Philharmonic at the Concerts in the Parks series, performed at The Brooklyn Bowl, The Knitting Factory, the commencement ceremony for the Art Institute of NYC, and many other prestigious venues and private events. They have also been attracting serious attention on social media with their live videos featuring the top singers from the local New York City scene.

The Side Project has one instrumental album out, #ThisPartySax (2015), and will be releasing their second album in July 2019 under their label Rabbit Rabbit Rabbit Records. The album features guest vocalists, covers and original songs.

Below is the interview with Vents and The Side Project:

Hi folks, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

We’ve been busy! We’re in the middle of our Northeast coast tour. We have an album coming out; we recorded 7 new tracks and filmed a music video.

This song comes from your new album Everything We Do – what’s the story behind the title?

The title of the album is a take on the track “Everything I Do”, which is the first original song we are releasing. This album is also a document that showcases all the work we’ve been doing in the past two years

How was the recording and writing process?

While working on all these covers with singers in the last 2 years we developed our own sound and language. When we started working on the album we used the language we created to bring life to our own original music.

Would you call this a departure from your previous musical work?

This album is an evolution from our last album. The first album was about establishing our sound as a saxophone quartet – Showcasing our own unique way to arrange popular music in this type of ensemble. On this album not only did we add vocals which is a huge growth, but we are also sharing our own original music for the first time which is super exciting for us.

What role does NYC play in your music?

NYC has a huge part with the formation of the band. The first time we ever played together was in the NYC subway station and we’ve continued busking there and developed our sound for the next 3 years. Later on when we started collaborating with singers we found ourselves working with the most diverse group of singers we could imagine for the pure fact we’re all in NYC.

How did you get to tweak and toy with the classic concept of Jazz and soul?

we enjoy exploring the endless options of a saxophone quartet. In our music the groove and the harmony are leaning on the saxophone and that’s something very rare in any type of music.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

Our songs are about big universal feelings. We feel like this band has a force that’s stronger than the sum of all of us. It might be the reason why the songs are so big and abstract

Any plans to hit the road?

As a matter of fact we are all sitting in a van together as we write these answers. This is our Northeastern tour for the summer and we definitely plan on many more in the future.

What else is happening next in The Side Project’s world?

Our album is coming out on July 26, we also have 2 music videos to be released later in the fall. We already started tracking our next album and we can’t wait to finish and tour with it.
