Today Andrew Rinehart is joined by fellow Louisville native Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy in the official music video for their cover of The Grateful Dead’s “Friend of the Devil.” BackSeat Mafia has the premiere.

Rinehart explains how the video came to be:

“With Will’s blessing, I dreamt up a drug trip dream sequence I thought would please the spirit of The Dead. Cut to a fortuitous meeting with my friend Tim Morton and a few green screens later — we’re in. An old Western town is the setting, Will does a mean Doc Holiday impression, toy horses are ridden, a Dead poster comes to life, and a new game show is born. It was absolutely the most fun music video I’ve ever made. Special thanks to Jerry and the boys for the song, Will Oldham for his fabulous dance moves, and to surfers in San Luis Obispo who showed me what the Grateful Dead lifestyle is all about (if only I could get there).”

Originally from Louisville, KY, Andrew Rinehart has been active in both the Brooklyn and LA DIY scenes for the last 11 years. He co-founded the Body Actualized Center in Bushwick, and helped curate shows at Downtown LA’s “secret venue” Basic Flowers. Along the way he’s released a double LP on Buddyhead Records, 4 EPs, and a slew of singles.

He recently released a new EP titled Have Fun Idiot, along with a music video for the 1st single “Zoë.” Helmed by up-and-coming LA director Cory Nixon, the video pays homage to queer Filmmaker Greg Araki’s The Doom Generation, with cameos by LA musical IT couple George Clanton and Lindsey French (aka Negative Gemini).

The 6-song EP includes a Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy-assisted cover of The Grateful Dead’s “Friend Of The Devil,” and a reworking of a rare Arthur Russell side project track.
